Helping kids learn—really learn.

I’m passionate about supporting teachers, schools, and families with evidence-based, fun practices to improve literacy. I'm invested in this because I know it can truly enhance students' learning and achievement.

Additionally, I'm certain that embracing my approaches will make you more knowledgeable, confident, and re-energized in what you do. And let's be honest, what you do is the toughest job out there: teaching.

What I Offer You

I've crafted a research-based and field-tested vocabulary curriculum called Word Love. This curriculum is specially designed to complement not only reading workshop Units of Study but also any other literacy program you're using. The good news doesn't stop there—many of these valuable resources have also been translated into Spanish. Keep your radar on and make sure to sign up for the newsletter. By doing so, you'll gain access to a trove of free resources, handy tools, and the support you need.

And that's not all I have to offer. I've also put together a Character Vocabulary curriculum for students in grades K-5. This curriculum is a fantastic way to introduce students to a variety of character trait words that they can use in their writing, reading, and conversations.

There's more. I'm currently in the process of developing a Morphology curriculum. This exciting initiative is undergoing pilot testing with the participation of hundreds of teachers all across the country. If you're interested in joining this exciting journey, feel free to drop me a line.

What's on the horizon? I'm gearing up to create content-area literacy units. These units are super important because genuine understanding relies heavily on a student's bank of general knowledge. To stay in the loop about this upcoming endeavor, make sure you're subscribed to the newsletter.

Let's talk about more ways I can support you. Beyond these curriculum offerings, which I frequently make available as open-source to the world at no cost, I also provide comprehensive staff development in schools and districts across the nation and even around the world. If you're keen on forging a partnership, don't hesitate to send me a message. I'm here and ready to collaborate with you!

Meet Mike

How are teaching and learning done well?

I've spent more than two decades in education. First as a teacher in rural Mississippi, Washington D.C., and the South Bronx of New York City. After a decade in the classroom, I became a staff developer and curriculum author. I've collaborated with teachers and school leaders across the country and the globe. These experiences inform the knowledge and skills I bring to my work: helping kids learn.

Whether you are a teacher looking for extra tools & information to help you teach reading and writing, a parent looking for ways to enrich and expand your child’s education, a school leader looking for researched and tested materials to support your staff and students, or someone interested in the latest news, ideas, and commentary about education and literacy in the country—you can find what you need at here.

I know that learning is challenging, fun, and rewarding. Join me in embracing the joy, challenges, and pride that come with learning and teaching done well.
